Learning of the day

My friend got into a minor accident. Soon after he was surrounded by mob of 200 people. The first question the mob asked was "What is your religion and caste". Well he qualified for "indifference" category and was spared at the moment. So mob weaned away. He took the concerned person to hospital. There once again he was mobbed. He dealt with situation very tactfully and shared his learning of the day.

Firstly, when you are mobbed, handle the situation with utmost care. Identify a leader for them and award him leadership. The mob effect will go away.
Secondly, power lies in network. Keep pinging your friends once in a while.
Thirdly, Body build matters.
And lastly, when you are surrounded by huge angry crowd. Always search for two kind of people. One is angry young man. Listen to them with patience and attention. Other is someone who could be influenced by you and is appropriate to be declared leader of mob by you.

He came out of situation unharmed. It could have been dangerous situation. God bless him and his learning.
Good Night

Rohit Vemula case

A lot has been written in media on the aggressive and emotional speech of Smt. Smriti Irani. Her speech has become talk of the town.

After little reluctance, I hesitantly searched for it on you tube and listened to some bits and pieces of it. In my opinion, the content of the speech is overshadowed by her drama and "Tulsi effect". She is unnecessarily rhetorical. May be a part of it is forced due to opposition's hullabaloo. But the way she presented the facts was brow raising.

I am not a big fan of her since her Tulsi days. I used to hate it when year after year, every time I visited home, i would find my whole family glued to television. They would be thrilled, shocked and awestruck with the new machinations in her family and new adventures of her to break even the situation.

What pained me most was her unnecessarily invocation of Durga in parliament. Just to score a political point, she is diving the country by giving importance to such poster. And in the process she forgot that she is making the tribals who pray Mahisasur, a possible victim of whatsApp and facebook trials. As a HRD minister, she ought to possess better understanding of India's culture.

A bigger menace prevailing in the society is of WhatsApp. As such WhatsApp is a useful tool for instant messaging and media sharing. But what troubles me is the kind of content which floats on these media networks. A message I read was advocating a repeat of Tianmann square massacre in JNU. Another message was calling for heads of Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid. Such kind of passionate thoughts without supporting evidence and sound reasoning will soon mark the death of democracy and pave path for rise of fascism. Here I am not supporting Kanhaiya and Umar. Anyway matter is sub-judice and there has been enough of media trial so its better to wait and watch the court proceedings. What I am concerned about is lack of understanding among we Indians about idea of India.

I finished reading Arundhati Roy's "The Algebra of infinite justice". It talks about various things and one among them is idea of India where she slowly strips down rightist mentality. Anyway that requires a separate book review blog.

now off to sleep. Goodnight.

Terrible mistake

Life is all about your priorities and what gives you happiness. Money is not happiness though it can help in getting most of the material things of life.

Great leaders have some common qualities. They are risk takers. They are eccentric and very stubborn people. And in there personal sphere, they are not democratic. Instead they are forceful. Their opinions are rigid and they are full of passion. And they go against familial wishes to make it big.

For example, parents of Bill Gates or Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg would not have liked their wards dropping out of top league college.
Parents of Gandhi Ji, Nehru Ji, Amitabh Bachchan, or Atal Bihari would have never agreed with that path breaking step which proved turning point of their life.

And definitely, Modi or Kejriwal or Indira Gandhi all were stubborn and possess high ego.
Sometimes I wonder if it is essential to have high ego in attitude or not. Since childhood we are taught to be generous, large-hearted and develop egoless behaviour. Is it some premeditated plan of every parent to kill the leader in their child. To destroy his rebel instinct.

I am tired of mosquitoes. Even after the good night liquid standing on 24-7 guard, so many mosquitoes have infiltrated my territory. I should fix time for this activity so that everything else is kept aside and I can write with peace and focus.

Good Night.

Collage

I was confused for a while. Whether I should title it as "Collage" or should I name it "Cocktail". Anyway eventually I settled for collage over cocktail. All I remember of the cocktails is the joy my friends used to derive while sipping drops from the fancy glasses in princely style and the stinking shitty smell of the semi solid waste they would push back up through esophagus. The process is called vomiting.

Collage is much better title for the content of the day. Because today I am going to write on diverse range of topics and episode in and around me.

So my factory staff accompanied me to Noida. He helped in shifting and settling stuff at my place. He is a typical villager, whose life's tension has taken a toll over his body. Just like mine has started taking nowadays. The only difference is my ageing is accelerating without any visible tension. His teeth are reddish and black in color. Most of it has already decayed, thanks to heavy consumption of tobacco. With ear machine, glasses and thin lean tired body structure, at times he look lost. But he is an expert. He can fix electricity, carpentery and general furniture fitting related work at good speed. Out of curiosity, I asked him, how many kids he has? He said two. With little lowering in voice, He added "both are girls". I started counting him government schemes for girls like SABLA, Balika Vidya Dhan, Education schemes.

It gave me an opportunity to see the prevailing psychology in the society. He gave different arguments. One, each girls bring their destiny with them. What can we do? Second, No body knows about these schemes. Government never tells. Some people says, girl is responsibility and boy is luxury. At other times, we here government doesn't do anything.I spotted different emotions in this. Like first case it was anxiety and learned helplessness. Second time it is hopelessness and lack of faith. In 3rd case, It is bias, prejudice. In forth case, It is blame tendency, projection and transfer of responsibility.

The problem with collage style is time. It is time consuming process to write large blogs. I wanted to write in details about each of the emotion and attitude but clock stops me from doing so.

To sum up, let me write 3 case studies as well.
Brazil where economic stimulus had reverse effect. It led to shrinking of economy.
Second Ambagad village where villager imposed tax on open defecation. Third case is Kovarbai, 104 year old lady who sold her goat to build the toilet.

Anyway, going to sleep now. Wish to write a lot but it takes time. I had thought I would compile lot of case studies and write about human emotions which I see on day to day basis. But seems like I could not do well. In the effort to write all that is cooking up in mind and competing with clock, I end up compromising with quality and jump helter-skelter.

So now enough of jumping. Time to jump on bed for sleeping. Need to wake up before Suryadev.. :)

Good night.

Happy Birth Day

I have discovered a real nice way of sourcing content. Today was power packed. First half was very lethargic. But second half was equally hurried.

I loaded my furniture in Matador and traveled to Noida. It was wonderful journey. Will write about that later.

Anyway, reached home, cleaned it and settled my furniture. So now time to sleep. Want to write a lot. But have to go office tomorrow.

Good night

Death

Everyday when I think of blogging, one of the major issue is "What topic should I write on?". I asked Prathmesh today, he said Death and so I began my unabashed blabbering once again.

Death is termed as ultimate reality of life. According to Hindu philosophy everything else is Maaya or myth. It is not always fear inducing or abhorrent thing. Go to a hospital and visit a terminally ill patient, his eyes tells, for how long he has been waiting for death. Though his first preference may be life. Meet a soldier in the battlefield, Death does not induce fear in his soul. It may produce anxiety considering the tension of well-being of family members but it does not produce fear.

If your imagination restricts you from venturing so far, you can find ample examples in your immediate neighborhood. Take a student who has failed in competitive exam despite his best efforts. In my observation and experience, he would certainly be not fearful of death for next few days of receiving the result. He will not be suicidal but certainly he will be indifferent to death or life. I had similar experience when my IIT results were out in my teenage years. I just wanted to go miles and miles away from my home and I forced my way. I opted for Surathkal. And the journey continues.

Today my friends received their UPSC result. Some had positive results. Others close to my heart, failed. I have had similar experience 4 times earlier. It is a strange feeling. Suddenly you start wishing. You wish that time goes back. You wish UPSC issues a clarification or correction. You wish your roll number appear somewhere between two roll numbers just like Harry potters magic platform used to emerge between two regular platforms. You learn to laugh at yourself. You develop more humility. Suddenly the problems of common man become more visible to you. you become more sensitive and more receptive. You start feeling unlucky but seeing the problems of people around you, you realize you are very lucky. The waves of emotion forms some cocktail effect on mind, body. However it leaves a cathartic cleansing effect on the soul. That is the beauty of failure. And in a way that is the beauty of winning over death.

My friend often remarks, everything you love, you must destroy. Because if you don't then death will destroy you. And if you can you'll embrace death large heart.

New age diseases

There was a time when plague, cholera, black fever had become synonym of death and destruction. The plague in Surat city ate up numerous healthy and happy lives.

Time changed. Technology advanced. Civilization progressed. The focal point of disease incidence changed from infectious to non-infectious diseases. In the race, diseases like cardio-vascular diseases, diabetes etc topped the chart.

With the advent of information and digital technology and its percolation to every nook and corner of life, society is inflicted with a new kind of disease. Thus class of patients are "whatsApp and facebook rogi". WhatsApp is their food, air, water, love, family, work, and everything. Every activity of their life be it relieving themselves in bathroom or sleeping in bed with husband or kids or having food at dinner table, is laced with chat messages from social media.

Sometimes, I wonder how productive and fun is all of this. What sort of temptation or need does it satiate? To my understanding hunger and sex are two primary needs. But even they arise after some routine time interval. Then what is this strange need which is not so well documented in Psychology.

The proliferation of smart phone has led to information addiction disorder. In my opinion, human body follows a self-balancing and self-correcting mechanism.

The day is not far when people will start running away from WatsApp or at least put it on mute for certain hours of the day. In the end, peace of mind is a bigger need than all other induced need. And surely, meditation will emerge as the best medication for WatsApp rogi.

New Year

I am running almost 48 days behind the new year. This blog was pending for long long time but only today I could gather my energies and overcome my inertia to compile my thoughts.

In between, ample times I had thought of writing my experiences but for some reason I hesitated from writing. Mainly because it turns into a personal diary and I end up spilling lot of personal stuff on public blog.

Anyway few pending items first. I finished 9 books last year. This includes Sachin Autobiography playing it my way, Zero to One: Entrepreneurs must read, Bureaucracy gone crazier, The book thief, Everyone loves good drought by P. Sainath, Old man and the Sea, Getting India back on track, English August, Ten judgements that changed India, The man who mistook his wife for a hat by Oliver Sacks. Technically Sachin's biography was finished in Dec 14 so list remains to 9. I fell 3 short of target. More important is I could not write book reviews for all of them. A special thanks to Kiran ji for giving me these books.

Anyway I had set certain targets for my new year resolution. Though I did not compile any formal list but I had some sense of my wish list. Here goes the list:
Finishing one book every two week and writing review for the same.
Writing Daily blogs.
Exercising at least 5 days in a week
Reading newspaper at least 5 days in a week
Learning one new technology every three month
Registering my NGO and company
Starting a book readers club
One fun trip with friends
Writing 3 articles of newspaper grade
Sleeping before 11 in the night at least 5 days a week
Meditate daily
Learn to set realistic goals

Over the years, I have understood the importance of Rabbit and Tortoise story. My takeaway is rather than the speed or length of step, what counts is whether you took a step or not.

My sister's wedding took place recently. This time I played more central role in managing and monitoring things. It was one wonderful experience. Earlier I thought I am good at controlling my anger and learned to manage my frustration but in crunch situations, frustration does come out in open. It'll take some more time and little polishing to overcome it. Sometimes anger is very useful tool to get the work done.

Earlier I had planned to write my daily experience of wedding ceremony. But there is no bigger enemy than indiscipline and laziness. I think one big issue was my inability to find my own space in the house and failure in sleeping on time.

In this context, let me tell you a mythological story which I came across while watching youtube recently. One day Lord Hanuman went to Suryadev. Suryadev is regarded as king of all planets and most knowledgeable and powerful among gods. Lord Hanuman asked Suryadev, "Dev, I wish to earn light and knowledge from you". Suryadev was amused. He tried to discourage Hanuman. He said "Hanuman I am continuously in motion. How would you manage to learn from me".
Hanuman true to his character remain adamant. He said, "Lord I'll walk one step ahead of you". Moral of story is if we wish to achieve knowledge and make it big in life, we have to be one step ahead of sun. Means wake up before sunrise and sleep after sunset. And be consistent like Sun.

Recently I shifted to Noida. Have found a place, got new bicycle and currently engaged in getting furniture. Will keep posting about that as well.

So now that I have satisfied all my narcissistic appetite by blabbering so much about myself, please allow me to write some substance.

The hottest topic which comes to my mind is JNU. It is really unfortunate, shameful and disgraceful to see people shouting anti-India slogans and linking it with religious sentiments. One of the slogan says, "Bharat tere tukre honge, Insha allah Insha Allah". Most of the main stream media has focused on what has happened and who could be blamed for this. Newspaper and Digital media are colored as per their political affiliations and political ideology. Most sadly and as expected, Even Hindu has shown its left leaning approach again by limiting itself to oblique criticism of the issue.

However what is most worrying is "No one is talking about why did this happen"? Was it a Pakistan sponsored protest? Are the Kashmiris grievances off the radar of our media and governance. Why the idea of "Bhartiya" not able to integrate "Kashmiriyat" into it? What is so beautiful and precious which Pak has provided to our angry frustrated brothers of kashmir which we have failed to provide?

Was it about Afzal guru or Was he just a fig Leaf? Anyway Afzal was given a fair chance of review petition, curative petition and presidential pardon. He had exhausted all the legal options so terming his hanging as judicial killing would be unjust. Yes, some procedures were not followed during hanging. But given the polarization in Kashmir, a quite hanging was need of hour.

I recently finished my first book of the year. Coincidentally it could be considered a text book on Kashmir insurgency and contemporary kashmir politics. It is first hand account of Kashmir by former RAW chief and Vajpayee's Kashmir representative A.S. Dulat. My knowledge from the book combined by my reading of current situation suggests that prime cause of such sloganeering is because of our failure to engage Kashmiris in the process of national development. Kashmir may have a geographical contiguity but it has a mental and emotional disconnect with rest of the country.

Pakistan provides a platform to such aggrieved kashmiris to express their heart and speak their mind. Probably that is why a significant number of misguided youth run to Pakistan every year and take weapons in their hand.

Does this mean, India should allow them to say and do Anti-India activities on its soil. Answer is absolute No. But what we need to do is engage them quitely and vigorously in development process. Most importantly we should engage them in debates, dissents and discussions so that we can defeat them in their ideology.

The group at JNU can not be suppressed with sedition charges. This is only going to aggravate the situation. Rather best would have been if we could find few patriotic Kashmiri students from some university in Kashmir or IAS cadre officers from Kashmir who could counter and blow these anti-India perception apart with their subtle knowledge of History and facts.

Anyway now that supreme court has jumped in the matter so I wish a better sense will prevail soon in all the camps be it rightist the patriot, leftist the dissenters or kashmiris the protesters.
